Child refugee killed, two seriously injured as war remnant explodes in Ponna Kyunt

A 10-year-old child was killed and two others were seriously injured when a remnant mine exploded near Kanan Taung railway station IDP camp in Ponna Kyunt township.

 

The victims have been identified as Maung Nay Toe Hein (10), son of U Zaw Naing from Sin Thee  village.

 

The injured children are Maung Myo Zaw Hein (8) and Maung Myo Chit Oo (6).

 

The incident took place at around 12 noon on Sunday, while the children were playing near the camp. The mine was thrown by the children and suddenly it exploded, said Yota Yoke village administrator.

 

"They  were playing. I believe the mine exploded when they threw it," he added.

 

The injured children are recovering at Sittwe general hospital.

 

The local residents reveal that the junta forces were stationed near the explosion site. The have been taking shelter there since last year.

 

From November 2018 to October 2021, altogether 49 local residents were killed and more than 70 were injured by the explosion of landmines and remnants of military weapons across Rakhine State.
