A local resident informed Narinjara News that following the junta's airstrikes at around 12:30 pm on 22 March, more than 10 people were killed and many were injured.
"The airstrikes were carried out without any
ongoing fighting. Additionally, many artillery shells were fired. The village
is now engulfed in flames. The monastery's ordination hall, a school and
residential houses were also destroyed. A monk and a novice also sustained
injuries," added the resident.
The injured include U Naga Saena (aged 42), one
novice, Maung Kaung Khant Kyaw (17) and Ma Hnin Yu Shwe (12) from Nyaung Kan
village in Kan Htaung Gyi sub-township. Narinjara News is still looking for all
names of those injured.
The villages between Ann and Myebon townships were targeted by the artillery shells from the 373rd light infantry battalion and battlefield engineer battalion stationed in Ann.
"They also used the multiple launch rocket
system. The explosions were so loud that those could be heard from a distant
location," he said.
The Ann residents could hear the sound of shelling
from a Mi-35 helicopter till afternoon hours.
The residents reported that artillery shells and bombs
were fired by the junta forces targeting Kan Htaung Gyi, Nyaung Kan, Taung Pauk
villages along with Shauk Chone in Kazu Kaing village-tract.
Nyaung Kan village supports around 370 houses
comprising over 2000 residents.
In 2020, an artillery shell fired by the junta
soldiers killed four people including a school teacher and her son hailed from
Nyaung Kan village.
