Narinjara News, 4 February 2023
More than 600 Myanmar nationals, who were detained for various reasons in Thailand and their dates of release
had already passed, were extradited
on 2 February from a Thai immigration detention center in Ranong to Kawthaung of Myanmar.
The group of people including 543 men and 136 women were sent
back through a jetty of Ranong in
the morning hours.
The immigration, police and general administration officials plans to accept those Myanmarese migrants.
Dissatisfied with their continued detention at Ranong detention center, the Burmese migrant workers staged a protest demonstration inside it on 28 January.
Soon after the protest, the authorities of Thailand and Myanmar discussed and decided to extraditate
those waiting to return home in the
first week of February, said one of the detained Myanmarese nationals.
“It has been four to five months since we were waiting for
our release. Some were even
detained for seven to eight months despite
their release dates having expired. So we had no other choices but to protest. Now we are to return back
to our places,” he added.
According to the concerned Thai authorities, over 80 percent of Myanmar nationals coming into Thailand
took illegal ways in various forms.
