Cyclone Mocha, which hit Rakhine coastal areas yesterday, destroyed Tin Nyo IDP camp located in Mrauk U
township.
The camp used to support 773 households with a population of 2864.
The refugee camp was earlier damaged by a fire that broke out in 2021. It was later rebuilt with support from
donors.
The camp in-charge U Kyaw Myint informed that they were facing the crisis of drinking water, food and
medicines.
"Currently, we have only one day’s food stock in the camp. We urgently need food items along with
drinking water and medicines for refugees,”
he added.
Many houses of Tain Nyo village have also been damaged. Along with the refugees, other villagers have also
taken shelter in monasteries and government
schools.
It has created a major problem for arranging food items for all the people. They need urgent support for
survival, said a local resident.
Mocha has crashed many temples, pagodas, mosques, hospitals,
clinics, schools, markets and
private houses in the last few hours. The cyclone passed over the Rakhine coast at a speed of 195 kilometers (120
miles) per hour.
