Amnesty International considers indiscriminate attacks on civilians as war crimes



 At least 13 individuals were killed and 29 others injured  following the explosion of an artillery shell fired by the junta forces in Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State, which Amnesty International considers as war crimes.

 

"Amnesty International learned through the media that on the morning of 29 February, when the Myoma market was crowded, an artillery shell fired by the Myanmar military exploded inside the market in Sittwe. The death toll from the incident has reached 12, including a 2-year-old child. Such indiscriminate attacks against civilians constitute war crimes," said the global body in a statement issued recently.

 

Narinjara News learned that 13 individuals were killed and 29 injured when the artillery shell struck a bazaar near Myoma market.

 

The deceased individuals include  Daw Aye Mya Thandar Kyaw (aged 27) &  Ko Than Tun Aung (21) from Ywar Gyi (north) ward,  Daw Sein Aye (46) & Daw Ma Than Htay (45)  from block-4 of Kathal ward,  U Zaw Naing (48) & Ma Nandar Win (23) from Min Gan ward,  U Aung Kyaw Thein (64) from Kyaung Tat Lan ward, Daw Shwe Yin Ma (48) & U Kyaw Lin (42)  from San Pya (north) ward, U Ba Thein Maung (58) from Kyaung Tat Lan ward, Ko Murmud Hu Saung (20) from Barsayar village, Majita Bay Kay (35)  from Kone Tan ward and Ko Maung Min Ko Tun (18)  from Zaw Bu Gyar village.


In the Rakhine region, civilian casualties are increasing as the junta forces continue conducting airstrikes along with  navy personnel firing artillery shells over residential villages and wards.
