Two people killed, one injured in shooting & stabbing within two days in Sittwe

Two incidents of shooting and stabbing were reported in Sittwe, the capital city of Arakan State, within two days. At least two people were killed and one was injured, said Shwe young meetta foundation.

On the night of 5 October, an individual named U Maung Sein Tin (51) was shot dead in Set Yon Suu ward of Sittwe. His accompanying daughter also sustained gunshot injuries. Currently she has been recovering at Sittwe general hospital.

On the previous night, a man succumbed to knife injuries in Mingang ward of Sittwe.

Lately the incidents of theft, robbery, murder and violence have been increasing, said U Min Htaywar, chairman of Shwe young meetta foundation, a social support group in working in Sittwe.

“The people should be careful while moving in the night hours. Night time becomes risky for the Sittwe residents," he added.

Locals revealed that the shooting incident took place near the office of Arakan Liberation Party (ALP) led by Daw Saw Mya Raza Lin.

A resident confirmed, "I could hear the sound of gunshots near the ALP office. I have no more details.

A woman resident said that she does not dare to go out as the sun sets.

“We have to walk around with anxieties while it’s dark. After the military coup two years back, crimes in Sittwe are only increasing,” she added.

She expressed dismay that the police forces are not functioning properly to support the residents. On the other hand, the criminals are running their dark business in the capital city with no deterrence.
